What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are custom-made, tooth-shaped caps designed to cover teeth that are damaged, weakened, or severely decayed. By restoring the tooth’s shape, size, and strength, crowns provide a natural-looking appearance while ensuring a comfortable bite and function comparable to healthy teeth.

Dental bridges work in a similar way but are used to close gaps between missing teeth. A bridge consists of two crowns placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap, with an artificial tooth fixed in between. This option is ideal for patients seeking a non-surgical alternative to dental implants.

Crowns are one of the most common restorative dental treatments, used to enhance both function and aesthetics. They can be placed over a natural tooth or attached to a dental implant. Available in materials such as all-metal, all-ceramic, and porcelain-fused-to-metal, each type of crown offers its own set of advantages to suit different needs.

Why Might Teeth Need Dental Crowns?

The most common reason for needing a crown or veneer is a weakened tooth — often caused by decay, large fillings, or fractures. Crowns can also restore worn or discoloured teeth, giving them an attractive, natural shape.

Teeth that may benefit from dental crowns include:

  • Teeth with large fillings, decay, or cavities
  • Teeth that are cracked or chipped
  • Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment
  • Teeth with an irregular shape or colour that stands out from neighbouring teeth

By covering and strengthening the tooth, crowns help protect it from further wear or cracking, which could otherwise lead to extraction.

Our Dental Crown Process

1. Consultation

We begin by examining your tooth, assessing the extent of damage, and checking nerve health. X-rays may be taken to detect hidden issues and help determine if a crown is the right solution for you.

2. Tooth Preparation

Any decay is removed and, if needed, the tooth is filled. We then reshape the tooth to make room for the crown, followed by taking a precise digital impression for fabrication.

3. Crown Design

Using CAD/CAM technology, we create a 3D model of your tooth. This allows us to adjust for perfect shape, size, and bite before production.

4. Milling & Finishing

Your crown is milled from a solid ceramic block for strength, then hand‑finished and glazed by our skilled technicians for a natural appearance.

5. Cementation

The crown is tried on to ensure a secure fit and seamless blend. Once approved, it’s permanently cemented in place.

6. Review & Adjustment

About a week later, we review your bite, check crown stability, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure comfort.
